Coveduck - Stroke of Luck?
Back in the late 90's I happened to make contact with another Warford researcher. They (as he was representing a small group of fellow researchers) asked me if I knew of the legend of Jacob Warford and St. Peter's church? It goes as follows: Jacob Warford donated land to the church with the stipulation that all of his descendants be buried for free in the graveyard. I had been raised up hearing this from my mother, so there was excitement on both sides to find others who knew the story. (note of disclaimer- the anglican church does not support this story) I got my hands on copies of deeds and in the transcribing of these we found the connection that i personally did not know about, that being the connection to the Coveduck family. It is discussed in greater detail in William Coveduck's website, but here is in a nutshell. Elizabeth Coveduck married a Warford. She had two sons, William and Henry. They came to what is now known as Conception ... (more)
What's in a Name?
Names are often left to discretion of those who write them down. Or in my mother's case speak them out loud.
My mother was supposed to be Christened Florence. The minister said Frances. Mom was given opportunity to have Florence written in the records but she declined.
A name discrepency that exists in the Dawe family is one that I and one of my first cousin once removed disagree on. Early records of William and Elizabeth Morgan's daughter's name are listed as Emmalita. Yet her headstone states Emma Later. I feel it is sad that noone researched enough to find the woman's 'real' name. I imagine that the pronunciation over the years had lent itself to this spelling. The other argument is that this is the name as it should be and former record keeping was wrong. We have agreed to disagree on this matter. :-)
Brigus Loose Ends
Mom always said we were related to three other families. I have yet to prove a link.First was the Cluney family on Middle Bite Rd, Kelligrews
It turns out that May Cluney did indeed marry a Cecil Cluney, but to be honest I cannot find May in the obvious research. Therefore I am thinking she must be of a cousin type nature. Not technically proven but very good prospect.
Second was a teacher at Queen Elizabeth High School in Foxtrap, a Mr. Morgan. She called him 'Blacky Morgan', for he had at one time had black hair. This is most likely from her mother's family of Morgan's from North River. Here again I haven't the information to make definite link, but in this case it is laziness on my part.
Thirdly was politician John Crosby. I cannot find evidence of this, thoug again not investigated thoroughly. I must say though that here there are similarities in the face and booming voice that lends itself to definite probability.
A Childhood Chant
Mom spoke of when she was a little girl. She would be under her mother's feet chanting "Mary-julia-anna-munden-morgan-barnes" over and over. Mothers everywhere roll your eyes! :-)Well on the headstone, mom's mother is listed as Mary Julia Barnes So what of the other words? Just a child's ramblings? I think not!
Mary Juliana is the actual baptismal name, despite the fact that Mary Julia is on marriage certificate and headstone. Morgan is her maiden-name, and Barnes her married name. Mom said she was related to the Munden family. Could Mary Julia's mother's maiden name have been Munden-not proven, but would make sense.
Sarah-Sadie-Kit-Sally-Mom
Mom has had many names over the years. Baptised as Sarah, she was called Sadie or Little Sade by her family, As a teen she became a charwoman or cleaning woman, around this time she was called Kit. When she married Pop (aka George Fredrick Warford) they were known by neighbours as Uncle Fred and Aunt Sally.Mom worked hard for most of her life. She worked as mentioned as a charwoman, later as a cook for such families as the Pettigrews and Caseys. She worked at the Sanitarium and if not mistaken Newfoundland Hardboards. It was these two latter places where she worked alongside my mother and father. I mentioned to my Dad that those must have been fun days, going to work everyday with his wife and mother-in-law!
Mom and Pop only had one child, my mother. Mom used to say she had one child but raised five. This is because she had a hand in rearing all 5 of us Dawe girls.
